The Student Government Association Senate and Executive Board discussed Monday the possibility of changing the presentation of Mr. and Ms. Nicholls from its current time during an annual awards banquet to a different event or making it an event of its own. Traditionally, the Mr. and Ms. Nicholls winners are announced at the awards banquet for SGA, Student Programming Association and Student Educators and LeaderS along with the presentation of new officers and awards.
SGA Treasurer Greco Faria said while Mr. and Ms. Nicholls affects the whole student body, the awards given at the banquet do not and students are not interested in who wins those awards.
Marquita Christy, senator-at-large, suggested Mr. and Ms. Nicholls winners be announced in front of the Bollinger Memorial Student Union so nominees’ families could be there as well as interested members of the student body. She also suggested a disc jockey be present to make the event fun. SGA Director of Student Rights and Grievances Shawn Little said he thinks they should be announced during a basketball game.
SGA President Olinda Ricard said she had previously suggested the winners be announced at Crawfish Day.
“I feel the entire student body should get the privilege of knowing who Mr. and Ms. Nicholls are when it is announced,” Ricard said.
Ricard also said parents of the Mr. and Ms. nominees might not want to sit through the banquet.
There were not enough Senate members present to vote. The next Senate meeting is Feb. 5 at 4 p.m. in the Plantation Suite of the Union.
