Was Back to the Future right in predicting 2015?

Back to the Future is an American science fiction film produced in 1985 and refers to the present year of 2015. Robert Zemecki and Bob Gale wrote the film together after Gale wondered if he would have become friends with his father in high school before he was born. Several producers shot down the duo before Steven Spielberg decided to produce their film. When released on July 3, 1985, Back to the Future became the most successful film of the year and had viewers raging over the near future. The movie made several predictions as to what 2015 would be like in the future, but the question is, do the predictions compare to the present or not?

Alyssa Gros, sophomore education major from Thibodaux, said, “Zemeckis and Bob predicted that we would have flying cars in 2015. A flying car was built years ago but is not ready for use. Scientists are still investigating how a flying car will be driven.”
Dylan Kelley, safety and petroleum engineering major from Houma, said, “Video calling occurred in the film between Marty Mcfly and his co-worker. This concept does compare to 2015 now because video chatting is used to communicate around the world today. There are several different applications for video calling used today such as Skype, FaceTime and Tango.”

Kelley also said he feels the film does not compare to the present very much. There are other things such as self-lace tennis shoes and hover boards that are in the film, but have not yet been invented.

Aldrian Smith, education major from Thibodaux, said, “Holomax movies, or 3-D movies, were predicted for 2015 in the film. In the film, they had a Holomax theatre featuring the film Jaws 19. Today, we do have theatres that release 3-D movies. However, we do not have a theatres like the Holomax, which just produces 3-D movies and nothing else. 3-D movies are now a big hit.”
“We may not have everything predicted just yet, but I believe it is not too far from coming into play,” Smith said.
