Nicholls Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) hosted a “Women in Media” panel on March 27.
The panel was moderated and hosted by Kacie Fields, mass communication junior from Cut Off.
The guest speakers on the panel included five panelists. Three of the panelists graduated from Nicholls with a mass communication degree and said that this university inspired them to go into these careers.
The panel was held to discuss what women face in the media world. They discussed topics such as their daily life, jobs positions they currently have, gender bias and what their greatest challenge was in their profession.
“In this field, you just have to be ready to work your way up to the top, and some more exciting things will come in the future,” Nicole Henry, who works in Vision Communications, said.
When asked about gender bias, the panel’s answers varied.
“You will earn their respect over time if you show them that you can be a professional,” Julia Arenstam, from The Courier and The Daily Comet, said.
The women of the panel said women who are interested in the world of media need to be the best employee they can be in order to show the men, and women, in their workplace that they are serious about their career.
