Track to compete at Southland Conference Indoor Championships

After a solid showing at the Samford Open on Feb. 8 and 9, the men’s and women’s track teams are set to close out their indoor season at the 2019 SLC Indoor Track and Field Championship in Birmingham, Ala., on Feb. 24 and 25.

The championship will take place at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Events are scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 24 and 9 a.m. on Feb. 25.

The Colonels will resume competition with the outdoor season beginning in mid-March.

Men’s golf hosts second tournament of season

The men’s golf team is set to host the two-day LaTour Intercollegiate at the LaTour Golf Club in Mathews on Feb. 18 and 19. The tournament is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. each day.

The Colonels will then travel to Tallahassee, Fla., on Feb. 23 and 24 to compete in the Seminole Intercollegiate at the Golden Eagle Country Club.

The team is coming off of a sixth-place finish out of 15 teams at the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate in Mobile, Ala., on Feb. 11. Due to weather conditions, the tournament’s second round of play set for Feb. 12 was canceled.

Tennis teams look to continue win streaks

The men’s and women’s tennis teams will look to improve upon two-match win streaks following victories over Prairie View A&M and Jackson State.

The men defeated Jackson State 4-1 at the Colonel Tennis Complex on Feb. 16, while the women won with their second consecutive 4-0 shutout.

Both teams will travel to New Orleans on Feb. 20 to face Loyola at 2 p.m.

The men’s team will then host Southern Miss on Feb. 24 at 11:30 a.m.

The women’s team is set to host Troy on Feb. 23 at 12 p.m. and Louisiana Tech on Feb. 24 at 2 p.m.

Softball carries on with lengthy road stretch

Following a 3-2 showing at the Houston Classic on Feb. 15 through 17, the softball team is set to continue its month-long stretch of road games at the Mardi Gras Classic hosted by South Alabama in Mobile on Feb. 22 through 24.

The Colonels are scheduled to face Hofstra on Friday and Saturday at 10 a.m. and 9 a.m., respectively. They will continue on Saturday at 11:15 a.m. against Illinois.

The team will finish out the tournament on Sunday with a second matchup against Illinois at 9 a.m., followed by a game against South Alabama at 1:30 p.m.

Baseball continues home play after winning first series of season

The baseball team is set to host Alcorn and Grambling at Ray E. Didier Field following a victory over Southern Illinois in a three-game series on Feb. 15 through 17.

After falling to Southern Illinois 5-6 on Friday, the Colonels secured a win over the Salukis on Saturday in the 14th inning of play on a walk-off home run from sophomore outfielder Dane Simon.

They then went on to defeat Southern Illinois 7-3 on Sunday.

The Colonels will face Alcorn on Feb. 19 and 20, both at 6 p.m., followed by a three-game series against Grambling on Feb. 22 at 6 p.m., Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. and Feb 24 at 2 p.m.

Women’s basketball returns home following five straight road games

After falling to Abilene Christian 76-66 in Abilene, Texas, on Feb. 13 and defeating Houston Baptist 58-55 in Houston, Texas, on Feb. 16 to close out five consecutive road games, the women’s basketball team returns to Stopher Gym to face Sam Houston State and Central Arkansas.

The Colonels will host Sam Houston at 6 p.m. on Feb. 20, followed by Central Arkansas on Feb. 23 at 1 p.m.

A pair of wins would improve the team to 10-4 in conference play and 9-1 at home.

Men’s basketball continues conference play in Texas

The men’s basketball team is set to travel to Huntsville, Texas, on Feb. 20 to face Sam Houston State. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

The Colonels will then return home on Feb. 23 to host Central Arkansas at 3:30 p.m.

The team is coming off of a 64-48 loss at home to Abilene Christian on Feb. 13, followed by an 88-82 loss to Houston Baptist in Houston.
