On Jan. 23, the Student Programming Association hosted Café Du Nicholls, an event where they handed out beignets, coffee and hot chocolate to new and returning students.

230 students attended the event that was part of Welcome Back Week to show student appreciation. Student appreciation is important to the members of SPA because it lets the students know that they are not expected to just get their studies done, but that they can also have fun on campus, too.

“The purpose of that whole week is to make sure everybody is welcomed back to Nicholls, and they don’t feel like they are going to have to go through a rough semester,” said SPA vice president Saurav Shrestha.

Returning students were able to enjoy some free time between classes and chat with friends, and for some, the event reminded them of home.

“It gave me a chance to meet with other students and just enjoy myself, and it was like somewhat of a taste of home,” Brandon Thomas, a freshman from New Orleans, said.

Not only do events like Café Du Nicholls give students a way to destress and mingle with friends, but they also give students who are new to campus the opportunity to meet new people and see what the campus has to offer.

“I think it’s a great way to get the few new students that came to our school this semester to branch out and meet new people,” said student Amanda Eschete.

SPA plans to host the event at the beginning of the spring semesters to come.
