Nicholls soccer faces postponed games due to inclement weather
September 27, 2018
Mother Nature has added herself to the Nicholls State University women’s soccer team roster this season.
A good number of Colonel soccer matches have been rescheduled due to some harsh weather conditions.
Head coach Mac McBride said that two games have been rescheduled due to heavy rain and thunder, since it has left the soccer pitch dangerous and unplayable.
“The only change at this point in time, the game that was meant to be on the 14th of September is going to be on the on the 7th of October, which is a Sunday at 1:00 p.m.,” McBride said. “But there are actually three games totally we need to compensate.”
McBride said the inclement weather disrupted much needed home games.
“For the players, it can be really difficult, because we are not really at home a lot of the times. We have been cleaning water off the field during warmup; we have only been playing on the game field twice. The way we are trying to ask the players to play is in conduce to playing on a poor surface. It is difficult. We don’t always feel settled; there is no continuity.”
McBride said the team tries to focus on the things they can control.
“[When it starts raining] at our facility, we try to get them out on the artificial turf, just to keep them loose, keep them moving. But it is very difficult to mentally prepare when they don’t really know what is going on. They do the best that they can, they are quite resilient in that aspect,” McBride said.
Colonels junior goalkeeper Roosa Hurmerinta said she and her teammates try to eliminate extra distractions during weather delays.
“To stay mentally on top, we try to stay together as a team,” Hurmerinta said. “Stay focused on the game and not stay on your phone; completely switch it off.”
Hurmerinta said that all games are the same, no matter if they are rescheduled or not.
“The game was just rescheduled to another weekend; it was never there. We are going to have the same mentality to this [rescheduled] match as we would have to any other match.”
The Colonels (2-7, 0-2 SLC) are set to play a home Southland Conference match against the Houston Baptist University Huskies Friday at 4 p.m.
Following HBU will be a game against the Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi Islanders on Sunday at 1 p.m.
