Sigma Sigma Sigma set to host 9th annual Running for Robbie 5K
September 26, 2018
Nicholls State University’s Sigma Sigma Sigma will be hosting their 9th annual Running for Robbie 5K race Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Harold J Callais Student Recreation Center.
“Robbie Page was the son of a former Tri Sigma National President. He died at the age of five due to polio disease because there was no cure back then,” said Sigma Sigma Sigma president Lauren Constant. “The memorial was funded to find a cure for polio, but now supports children’s play therapy for their illnesses.”
All proceeds from the event will go to Sigma Sigma Sigma’s national philanthropy, the Robbie Page Memorial Fund.
“Running for Robbie is a 5k color run race at the recreation center,” said philanthropy event planner Alyssa Lusco. “There will be a jambalaya cook-off, raffles and paint themed games for everyone to enjoy.”
Runners should be prepared to get colored powder on clothing for race day, as well as some sun.
Collection chair Katherine Hyde said, “The event will start at 9 a.m. with the kid’s run, followed by the 5k and the rest of the activities throughout the day.”
Hyde encourages people to sign up for the event and said lots of Greek life organizations on campus get service hours for attending Running for Robbie and supporting Tri Sigma through this event.
“The expected turnout will be around 450 people this year,” said Lusco. “We added the color run idea on this year to attract more people, and we’re pretty happy with the results.”
Tickets for the event can be purchased on the Running for Robbie Facebook page with mobile pay. A 5K VIP package is $25 and includes admission, a race packet and jambalaya. A kid’s package is $15 and includes admission, a kid’s race package and jambalaya. A general package is $10 and includes admission and jambalaya.
“All of the girls in charge of the event have really done such an amazing job, and I’m so proud of all of the hard work they’ve done since they assumed their positions,” said Constant. “I’d really like to thank all of our sponsors for this event, the Nicholls Recreation Center and everyone who supports the event by participating and donating.”
