Release Radar: 5 notable musical releases in today’s urban culture
August 29, 2018
After an exciting summer for music enthusiasts, this influx of quality music is showing no signs of slowing down. Rappers have been dropping projects left and right and teasing their upcoming work, so here are five of the most built up releases in today’s urban culture:
- Chance and Gambino’s joint album
Social media has been buzzing about Childish Gambino and Chance the Rapper’s upcoming collaborative album. Spurred by classic tracks like “Favorite Song” and “The Worst Guys,” a reputation has arisen for these two for having some of the best collaborative work in today’s rap game. The highly anticipated joint album has yet to been titled or given a release date, but Chance spoke on the progression of the project on Complex’s “Open Late with Peter Rosenberg” when he said, ”We’ve got six songs that are all fire, but I think the album is going to be more than 14 songs.” Nonetheless, Chance and Donald have some greatness in the works.
- Lil Uzi Vert’s Eternal Atake
Lil Uzi Vert, as always, has been teasing his newest album, and stirred up a lot of hype for his upcoming project Eternal Atake. Not long after dropping his last album Luv is Rage 2, the Philadelphia rapper took a hiatus from social media to focus on “working on the best music in his and your life,” Mean Management said on a now-deleted instagram post from Uzi’s account. From leaks and snippets to cover art teases, Eternal Atake is starting to overflow with hype. Just drop it already, Uzi.
- XXXTentacion and Lil Peep’s “Falling Down”
Following the sudden death of XXXTentacion, talk of an unreleased track with late rapper Lil Peep surfaced. Because XXXTentacion and Lil Peep shared a similar musical style, the possibility of a posthumous track seemed very likely. Rapper iLoveMakonnen informed the world that shortly before his death, XXXTentacion was inspired to record for a preexisting Lil Peep track entitled “Falling Down.” Once released, this track will be the first and only collaboration between these late young talents.
- Famous Dex’s Crazy vs. Weird
Known for hit tracks “Japan” and “Pick It Up,” Famous Dex recently announced his newest album, Crazy vs. Weird. Dexter has gained lots of popularity since his last tape, Dex Meets Dexter, which incorporated a different style from his earlier music. Many fans are anxious to see what Dex has in store. The project is set to drop on the Chicago rapper’s birthday on Sept. 6, so be sure to look out for whatever Famous Dex puts out this time.
- Quavo’s three singles
Displaying his solo talents outside of the Migos rap group, Quavo recently released three singles titled “Workin Me,” “Lamb Talk” and “Bubblegum.” Quavo also produced and starred in music videos for “Workin Me” and “Lamb Talk.” Quavo is often considered the most famous of the Atlanta rap trio, as he tends to be featured on countless tracks compared to the other Migos. Quavo definitely made a statement with these solo tracks, so see what all of the talk is about now, if you haven’t already.
This year has already proven to be an amazing one for music, and hopefully it continues to bring more content to the ever-expanding culture as time goes on. These musical releases have all been receiving attention recently, so they should stay on the cultural radar for some time to come.
