March 20, 2018

The Nicholls State University softball team ran its winning streak up to 10 games following its weekend series against the Stephen F. Austin State University Lumberjacks.

GAME RECAPS
The Colonels faced the Lumberjacks in two games Friday, March 16 and won both of them with walk-off hits.

In the first matchup, Nicholls entered the bottom of the seventh inning with the score 1-1 when junior shortstop and outfielder Amanda Gianelloni hit a double to allow freshman outfielder Kelsey Miller to run home for the 2-1 victory.

The second verse was the same as the first, when in the second game, Nicholls and SFA were tied 3-3 at the bottom of the seventh inning.

This time, freshman utility player Jewel Lara hit a double to let Gianelloni score for the 4-3 win.

On Saturday, junior first baseman and outfielder Kasey Frederick propelled the Colonels to a 3-2 win with a triple and a double that led to the team’s three runs for the game.

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE
After traveling for their first 21 games of the season, the Nicholls softball team is 6-0 in conference and 5-0 at home– the only undefeated team in the Southland Conference (SLC).

Swanner Softball Field is proving to be a source of good fortune for the team, especially with three close victories over St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

During its five home victories the Colonels outscored the Mississippi Valley State University Delta Devils and Stephen F. Austin State University Lumberjacks a combined total of 26-9.

LOOKING AHEAD
The Colonels (19-7, 6-0 SLC) travel to Hammond to face the Southeastern Louisiana University Lions (15-11, 4-2 SLC) this Friday, March 23.

The Lions play the Alcorn State University Braves (1-16) at home Tuesday before hosting the Colonels for a three-game weekend series.

The matchups take place Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at noon and 2 p.m.
