With the upcoming spring elections taking place next week, one of the biggest decision students will make will be whether to approve the student media referendum or not.
If passed, the current $9 fee for the Nicholls Worth and KNSU would turn into a $15 fee which would fund the combined student media outlets currently on campus: the Nicholls Worth, KNSU, La Pirogue and KNSU-TV.
The yearbook would stay on our campus for years to come, and Nicholls would have its own television station while the current student media would remain as well.
In a personal interview with softball head coach Angel Santiago, he expressed his opinion on the vote.
Santiago said he has always enjoyed student media at Nicholls and wants these forms of media to
last.
“The vote is going to determine whether it’s going to be enacted or not, but I really wish those avenues of communication can stay around,” Santiago said.
In the March issue of the Nicholls Worth, Santiago’s freshmen and transfer student-athletes grazed the cover, and he said it was great to highlight new players.
“I think when it comes down to when you’re new and you’re young, you kind of get lost in the shuffle a little bit from the more experienced players. I thought it was really brave of you guys to do something like this to get the young kids and say, ‘Welcome to the family.’”
Santiago said he is for the referendum and likes the idea of a university department coming together to share a single budget to work with all forms of student media.
The spring election will take place from noon on Mar. 18 to noon on Mar. 21.
Not only will students decide on a new Student Government Association and Student Programming Association administration, but they will also decide on how student media will stand as a whole at Nicholls State University.
