Since the opening of their respective seasons in early February, the Nicholls State University men’s and women’s tennis teams have struggled with consistency on the road.
LOOKING BACK
Both tennis teams started out the season on a high note after beating Mississippi Valley State University at the Colonel Tennis Complex.
Since the opening weekend of their spring season, the Colonels have struggled with picking up road wins. The men’s team currently sits with a 2-6 overall record, while the women’s team carries a 6-3 overall record. The women have won every other game since their opening weekend and hang onto a one-game win streak, and the men are riding on a six-game losing streak.
HOME IS WHERE THE WINS ARE
For the men’s team, their only two wins were earned on their home court. They have lost on the road to opponents in the state of Louisiana and in Alabama, and they have lost two home matches as well.
The women have seen even more consistency at home, as their home record is currently 4-1. The women also carry two road wins at the University of Southern Mississippi and Alabama State University.
Both teams have only faced one Southland Conference (SLC) opponent so far this spring in Abilene Christian University. For both the men’s and women’s teams, this matchup ended in defeat at the Colonel Tennis Complex.
HOME COURT ADVANTAGE
If home field advantage exists, the Colonels will be in luck this month. For the remainder of March, almost all of their games will be played at Nicholls at the Colonel Tennis Complex. The men will play five consecutive opponents at home while the women will play three games at home, one at Southeastern Louisiana University and then three more at home.
The men will play three SLC teams in the upcoming series of home games, while the women will face seven.
Since traveling every week can take a toll on athletes’ energy and mix up their daily routines, the Colonels will seek to take advantage of this extensive home stretch of games.
The women’s tennis team will play at home this week against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville on Wednesday, March 7 at 1 p.m. and against Northwestern State University this Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. and 11 a.m. respectively. The men’s team will resume play at home on Saturday, March 17 against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
