The Nicholls State University men’s golf team wrapped up two tournaments this the past week. In last week’s Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate tournament, the Colonels’ first tournament
since October, the team finished in a tie for 10th overall out of 16 teams.
In this week’s action, the Colonels hosted their annual tournament, the Atchafalaya Intercollegiate tournament. The team put up an impressive overall performance, and finished third overall out of 10 teams, the highest the Colonels have finished in a tournament this year.
TOURNAMENT RECAPS
Faced up against teams such as Florida State University and Notre Dame University, the Colonels faced a tough field of competition in the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate tournament.
After the first day of the tournament, which was ended early because of a weather delay during the second round of play, Nicholls was tied for eighth overall with Illinois State University.
The team shot a 299 overall, which was 11 over the par set for the round. Junior Jack Lee shot the best of any player in the first round of play, with a score of 71, one under par set at 72.
The second day of action ended with the Colonels being tied for 10th overall with Central Arkansas University. The team shot a round two and three score of 298 and 288, respectively, and ended the tournament with a score of 885. Senior Albert-Badosa Soler and Lee both individually finished with team high scores of 221 overall, which tied for 35th.
The Colonels performance in the Atchafalaya Intercollegiate tournament was one of their best. The team ended the first day of play tied for third overall with a score of 600.
Nicholls shot a round one score of 294, which was the second lowest of the opening round. The team’s newest addition, sophomore Edouard Cholet, shot a team low of 72 in the first round.
Day two produced similar results for Nicholls in terms of success. The Colonels shot a 297 in round three, good enough to cement their spot at third overall in the tournament with an overall
score of 897.
Badosa-Soler, last year’s Southland Conference Individual Champion, put up an impressive performance that earned him a tie for third overall individually, with a score of 221. Lee also found success, posting a 223, which was good enough for ninth overall. Both players shot a score of 73 in the final round.
WHAT’S NEXT
The Colonels will travel to Tallahassee, Florida, this weekend to participate in the Seminole Intercollegiate tournament hosted by Florida State University. Nicholls, as well as 13 other teams, will participate in the tournament, which will take place at the Golden Eagle Country Club.
GETTING TO KNOW
Badosa-Soler, a senior business major from Girona, Spain, has excelled and improved each year he has been at Nicholls. Along with being named Southland Conference Individual Champion in 2017, Badosa-Soler has garnered other honors during his time at Nicholls, such as First Team
All-Southland Conference and Second Team All-Louisiana. As many other student athletes do, Badosa-Soler enjoys playing his sport during his off time, as well as during the season.
“I play golf pretty much all the time. When I’m over here, it’s really busy between workouts, practice and class. We don’t really have that much time to do anything,” said Badosa-Soler. “Hanging out with the team is fun. We’ve gotten to have some team bonding. I listen to Spanish music mostly.”
