Nicholls track approaches final meet before indoor championship

February 7, 2018

As the indoor season comes to an end, the Nicholls State University women’s track and field team looks forward to their final meet this weekend and to the Southland Conference Indoor Championships which will follow.

LOOKING BACK
Last weekend, the Colonels competed at the Bayou Bengal Invitational in Baton Rouge where senior Hannah Naquin and freshman Eleana Callejas earned second and third place in the 800 meter. In the 800 meter, Naquin is currently ranked 17th in the SLC while Callejas sits at 19th.

As the end of indoor track season approaches, Callejas said her hard work has paid off even more than she imagined it would.

“I’m a much better runner than I was when I first started at Nicholls,” Callejas said. “I didn’t know I could ever run that fast, but now I can.”

LOOKING FORWARD
While the SLC Indoor Championships will mark a transition from the indoor to the outdoor season, this specific meet is one that head coach Stefanie Slekis has referenced throughout the entire indoor season.

Before the Bayou Bengal Invitational, Slekis said the team was pushing through another tough training block that will prepare them to perform their best at the SLC Championships.

According to Slekis, the difficult training that the team undergoes to prepare them for the SLC Championships also serves to maintain the SLC rankings that individual runners have earned thus far in the season.

“We’re looking to continue to move up the list as we prepare to compete at the Championships,” Slekis said.

INDOOR TO OUTDOOR
While the indoor track and field schedule consists of four meets followed by the SLC Indoor Championships for the Colonels, the outdoor schedule will include six different meets before the outdoor Championships. The team will compete at venues in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.

According to Naquin, although some of the races and events will vary from the indoor to the outdoor season, the team’s general practice routine will resume for the duration of the outdoor season.
