Colonel winning streak comes to an end with home loss

February 1, 2018

The Nicholls men’s basketball team learned that all good things must come to an end as
their five-game winning streak was broken in a home loss to Southeastern Louisiana
University on Saturday, January 27. The tightly contested matchup went down to the last
minute, but ultimately ended in a 67-63 loss for the Colonels.

RECAP
The Colonels came out from the tip with energy and defensive intensity, starting the
game on a 9-0 run and forcing a Southeastern timeout. The Lions then responded with a
7-0 run of their own to close the gap. The two teams went back and forth for the rest of
the half, resulting in a 31-31 tie at halftime. Senior guard Roddy Peters led the Colonels
at the half with 11 points.

The runs made by both teams defined the second half. Down 38-35, the Colonels went on
a 13-0 run to put themselves up by 10. Minutes later, Southeastern Louisiana answered
with a 19-3 run of their own to make the score 57-51 in favor of the Lions. The Colonels
were able to make it close again, but were unable to pull ahead in the final seconds due to
turnovers and missed free throws. The Colonels also struggled with three-point shooting
on the night, making only one of their 10 attempts.

Peters lead the team with 22 points. Guard Tevon Sadler recorded a double, with 10
points and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Kevin Johnson provided defensive intensity,
leading the team with five steals.

HONORING A NICHOLLS LEGEND
Before Saturday’s game, Nicholls basketball’s stunning new court was dedicated to a
Nicholls legend. Named “Broussard Court,” the new gym floor stands in honor of former
head basketball coach and Nicholls Athletics Hall of Fame member Rickey Broussard.
Broussard led Colonel basketball to many years of success during his 12 years as head
coach, including two Southland Conference championships and two appearances in the
NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

WHAT’S NEXT
The Colonels kick off a two-game road trip and will travel to face the University of New
Orleans. The Privateers currently lead the Southland Conference with a record of 11-10
and a conference record of 8-2. UNO has proved they can perform, winning eight of their
last 10 after a rough start to the season. Senior forward Travin Thibodeaux leads the
team’s offense, averaging 16.4 points per game, almost eight points more than the next
highest scorer. This will be an important conference game for the Colonels, as they
currently trail the Privateers by only a half a game.
