Women’s basketball falls short against in-state rival

January 30, 2018

The Nicholls State University women’s basketball team suffered defeat for the fourth straight game this past Saturday at Stopher Gym. This loss came at home against Southeastern Louisiana University with a score of 66-57.

GAME RECAP

The Colonels (8-12, 3-6 SLC) kept up with the Lions (4-16, 3-6 SLC) throughout the first half and trailed only by one point at halftime. However, the floodgates opened as Southeastern Louisiana outscored Nicholls 22-12 in the third quarter and earned a victory with a 66-57 final.

Junior guard Cassidy Barrios starred for the Colonels on the new Broussard Court with 16 points, seven rebounds, four assists, four blocks and three steals. Senior guard Tia Charles amassed 14 points and two steals, and sophomore guard Tykeria Williams added 11 points to the mix.

ANALYSIS

The Colonels ended up losing the game largely because of the Lions’ third quarter advantage. The 10-point swing proved to be just enough for them to win, and one lion played an excellent game.

Lions’ senior guard Taylin Underwood scored 22 points, had seven rebounds and an assist on the night.

Another big stat line for the Colonels was the poor shooting from behind the arc. The team shot 27 percent for the game.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Colonels return to action Saturday at 2 p.m. on the road against the University of New Orleans Privateers.
