Women’s basketball faced defeat in third straight game

January 26, 2018

Despite a highly competitive game between two Southland Conference teams, the Nicholls women’s basketball team fell to Lamar 76-61 Wednesday night in Stopher Gym.

GAME RECAP
The Colonels (8-11, 3-5 SLC) led the Cardinals (12-6, 7-1 SLC) 13-10 at the end of the first quarter, but trailed 31-30 at the half.

Nicholls regained the lead 39-36 in the third quarter but allowed Lamar to go on a 10-0 run and gain momentum.

In the fourth quarter, the Colonels came back to make the score 51-49, but the Cardinals held on and were able to pull off the win 76-61.

Junior guard Cassidy Barrios earned her ninth double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard Tia Charles led the Colonels with 15 points, sophomore guard Tykeria Williams had 13 points and redshirt center Marina Lilly added 10 points.

ANALYSIS
One of the main reasons why Lamar earned the victory was the turnovers they created. Their defense caused 25 turnovers in the game, and many turned into easy points. Their defensive game plan involved using a court press defense throughout the entire game. The Colonels defensively did not use the same strategy until the fourth quarter, which cost them in the end.

Lamar junior guard Moe Kinard had an outstanding game with 28 points, five rebounds and two steals. Kinard made seven out of 11 shots from behind the arc and made 50 percent of her field goals on the night.

Lamar senior guard DeA’ngela Mathis also played well with 19 points, five rebounds and a steal.

LOOKING AHEAD
The Colonels will play again Saturday at Stopher Gym at 4:00 p.m. against the Southeastern Lions. The game will be on ESPN3, and the men’s basketball team will play afterwards at 6:30 p.m.
