Phi Mu Dance Marathon
December 2, 2017
Phi Mu will be hosting its second annual Dance Marathon Dec. 1 at 6 p.m. in the Cotillion
Ballroom.
The Dance-a- thon is an event that is done nationwide with all proceeds benefitting the
Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Phi Mu is hosting this particular event because their National
Philanthropy is Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
Preparations for the event began in January of this year and involved the combined efforts of
Phi Mu, Children’s Miracle Network and a dance-a-thon national representative.
“I was beyond happy when I received the title of Philanthropy chair of Phi Mu,” Angelique
Olivier, business administration junior from Houma, said. “I had people from nationals as well as the children’s miracle network contacting me
wanting to start discussing preparations for the event.”
The event will include a DJ and a visit from a miracle family. These are families and children who
were/are actual patients at the children’s hospital.
“We have three of the miracle families coming Saturday,” Olivier said. “We also have videos of
some of the things that go on in the hospitals. We also show how what we are doing helps these families
and children so much.”
During the event several challenges will take place, and at the end of the night, several prizes
will be given out for the participants who raise the most money.
“This event is for you to enjoy your time there,” Olivier said. “We also put on challenges
throughout the night and see if people can raise money. If you are able to reach those funds, then we
have this big gong on stage that you get to run up and hit.”
The event is still in the process of seeing if it is catching on with the students and community.
“Last year it was mostly our chapter,” Olivier said. “However, this semester it is looking like we
are going to have more campus involvement, including support from the other sororities and fraternities
on campus. We are going to use this year to decide to either continue to develop this idea or try to look
into other events we can put on in the future.”
Registration is open to the entire community and campus. To register for the event, participants
must register online at a cost of $15.
“My favorite part is after everything is done and we are holding up the total,” Olivier
said. “We really get to see what all the work, craziness and determination was for and what it was going
to. At the end of the day we are doing this to raise funds for the children. I love knowing that I was able
to help someone or to at least impact someone a little bit. That, to me, is the best part of all of it.”
