Nicholls defeats Evangel, falls to LSU and Bradley
November 29, 2017
Over the Thanksgiving break, the Nicholls State University women’s basketball team played in
three games and picked up a lone victory against Evangel University.
Their first game took place Nov. 21 at the Maravich Center in Baton Rouge against the LSU
Tigers. The Colonels could not tame the Tigers and lost 65-50. Junior guard Cassidy Barrios
continued to star for the team, extending her double-double streak to four games, with 15 points
and 10 rebounds.
Nicholls then traveled to Missouri to play two games in the SEMO Thanksgiving Classic. The
Colonels faced the Bradley Braves the day after Thanksgiving and lost 75-65. The team fell
behind 24-12 after the first quarter, rallied in the third quarter, but failed to make a full
comeback. In this contest, Barrios’s double-double streak ended as she scored 16 points and
grabbed eight rebounds.
The third Colonel matchup over the break ended in a more positive fashion in a 72-55 victory
over the Evangel Crusaders Saturday. Defense proved to be the main factor in the game as
Nicholls created 24 turnovers and 11 steals. Barrios led the Colonels with 17 points, redshirt
sophomore guard Airi Hamilton added 15 points and redshirt freshman forward Paige Williams
had 10 points. Also, Nicholls made eight of their 16 3-point attempts, a season-high 50 percent
from beyond the arc.
Barrios has averaged 18.2 points and 10.3 rebounds per game through the first six games of the
season, and the Colonels (2-4) look to bounce back after a long road trip this past week. Nicholls
plays the Southern University of New Orleans Knights at David R. Stopher Gymnasium this
Wednesday at 11:30 a.m., and the Jackson State Tigers Saturday in Jackson, Miss. with the time
to be determined.
