The Nicholls State University football team added another win to their streak as they conquered the
Stephen F. Austin University Lumberjacks this Saturday with a score of 34-13 in Nacogdoches, TX.
The win was the sixth in a row for the Colonels and only the fourth win against the Jacks in the overall
series between the two teams. The Colonels improved their record to 8-2 overall and 7-1 in the
Southland Conference.
Once again, both the Colonel offense and defense proved their strengths as they came together on both
fronts to secure the win.
The team reached a season-high 418 yards on the ground during the game. Sophomore quarterback
Chase Fourcade threw for 152 yards and running backs Tahj Smith and Kyran Irvin had career-high
rushing performances with 179 and 160 yards respectively.
The defense put up a strong effort and limited the Lumberjack offense to only 261 yards of total offense.
Two freshman, Allen Pittman and Kenny Dotson, were standouts with Pittman recording 11 tackles and
Dotson recording eight stops and 3.5 sacks.
Special teams recorded some action for the Colonels against the Jacks as well. Junior kicker Lorran
Fonseca kicked field goals in the first and second quarters which allowed him to break the program’s
single-season record for field goals with 17 on the season.
Four Colonels scored touchdowns that were scored in the first, third, and fourth quarters. Irvan got
things started for the Red and Grey on a 38-yard run to the end zone only 12 minutes into the game.
After adding six more points to the board from Fonseca’s two kicks, freshman wide receiver Dai’jean
Dixon received a 47-yard pass from Fourcade to add another touchdown in the third quarter.
Junior wide receiver Damion Jeanpiere Jr. also caught a quick pass from Fourcade in the third to add
another. The Lumberjacks scored their first and only touchdown of the night in the third.
To seal the win and spoil SFA’s senior night, Smith ran the ball for 20 yards into the end zone and scored
the final Colonel touchdown.
With only one game remaining in their season, the Colonels will continue their road trip this week to
Hammond, LA where they will face rival Southeastern Louisiana University in the River Bell Classic on
Thursday at 6 p.m.
