Nicholls football resumes after bye-week, faces Incarnate Word

October 28, 2017

After a bye-week which allowed the Nicholls State University football team to rest and recover, the
Colonels will pick back up in San Antonio, TX this Saturday where they will face the University of the
Incarnate Word Cardinals.
The Colonels are currently 5-2 on the season with a 4-1 Southland Conference mark. With only four
games remaining in the season, the Colonels are sitting at fourth place in the SLC standings and have
been climbing up the FCS Coaches Top 25 Poll all season.
Moving up three spots in the week of Oct. 16 earned the Colonels the number 20 ranking which is the
highest they have had all season. Nicholls was previously ranked number 23 twice and number 25 on the
FCS Coaches Top 25 Poll earlier this season.
While the Colonels are coming off a three-game winning streak, the Cardinals are aiming to bounce back
after a tough loss to McNeese State University where they fell 7-55.
In a breakdown of the Cardinal offense which led McNeese to tie an NCAA record for picks, the Cowboy
defense recorded four interceptions returns for touchdowns last Saturday night.
The last Colonel football win kept their home record clean and allowed junior kicker Lorran Fonseca to
garner both Southland Conference and National honors after he broke the single-game program record
for field goal kicks with five on the night.
The kicker was named STATS FCS National and Southland Conference Special Teams Player of the Week.
This is the second weekly Southland Honor Fonseca has received this season, and it is the first National
award the Colonels have received since the end of last season, when Sully Laiche earned defensive
honors after the win over Stephen F. Austin. On top of these awards, Fonseca has also received LSWA
Special Teams Player of the Week twice.
In preparation for this weekend’s opponent during a previous interview, head coach Tim Rebowe said,
“We had a couple of guys who were banged up just like everybody who has played seven games, and we
had some work that had to get done. We used [the bye-week] wisely.”
Although the Colonels have defended their home turf at John L. Guidry Stadium with four wins, their
away record is 1-2. If the Colonels can even things out on the road this weekend, they will return home
to face Houston Baptist University the following weekend before hitting the road for their last two
games against Stephen F. Austin University and Southeastern Louisiana University.
Tune in to the game this Saturday at 2 p.m. on ESPN radio 100.3 FM to catch the Colonels vs. the
Cardinals.
