Volleyball drops two games, prepares for road trip
October 18, 2017
The Nicholls State University volleyball team lost the remaining two home games of a four-
game home stretch this past week.
On Oct. 12, the Colonels lost in four sets to Central Arkansas with set scores of 25-20, 25-19, 25-
27 and 25-15. On Oct. 14, Nicholls lost in four sets to Northwestern State with set scores of 25-
19, 14-25, 25-15 and 25-19.
Head coach Tommy Harold said his players made progress despite losing against tough
conference opponents.
“We were competitive and took a set off of Central Arkansas, one of the top teams in the
conference,” Harold said. “[Against] Northwestern, we had a set where everything was clicking
and we beat them pretty handily in the second set. We’ve got to put those together, though, and
start taking set wins and turning them into matches.”
The Colonels (3-19, 1-8 SLC) are next to last in the Southland Conference standings and have
seven matches left before the conference tournament in November.
Harold said their schedule involved great teams and long road trips, but the rest of the schedule
should be less strenuous.
“The nice thing is we get the tough part of our schedule behind us. We’ve played most of the top
half [of the conference], and we still have several games against some of the bottom half.”
The Colonels embark on a road trip and match up with the Lamar Cardinals tomorrow at 7:00
p.m. and the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks Saturday at noon.
The Nicholls volleyball team looks to compete well during another road trip as Harold said
success can come with the consistency of his team. “I think Lamar is a match that we got to go out and win. It’s always tough going on the road and playing in somebody else’s gym, but I think the girls are ready to do that. And then Stephen F. Austin will be a challenge. They’re a team that’s fighting for the top of the conference right now.
If we can put it together at the right time, I think some good things can happen.”
