The Nicholls State University football team prevailed in their battle against the Abilene Christian
University Wildcats, winning 29-20 on Saturday at John L. Guidry stadium.
The Colonels remain undefeated at home and are off to their best start since 2007. Their overall record
improved to 5-2 with a 4-1 Southland Conference mark.
While the Colonels trailed after the Wildcats scored in the opening drive, they were able to tie it up and
add another touchdown right before the half.
The first touchdown was scored by special teams after redshirt freshman Kevin Johnson blocked an ACU
punt and junior linebacker Adrian Richardson jumped on the ball to score. Sophomore running back
Dontrell Taylor then scored on a 2-yard rush making the score 20-10 at halftime.
Junior kicker Lorran Fonseca broke the single-game program record for field goal kicks with five on the
night. In the second half, he completed 27- and 34-yard field goals before he tied the program single-
game field goal record which was previously held by Adam Diel in 1996, with a 29-yard field goal. His
record-breaking fifth field goal was a 44-yarder kicked with six minutes remaining in the game.
Taylor saw his third career 100-yard game with the pinnacle coming in the form of a 49-yard rush at the
beginning of the third. He finished with 20 carries averaging 6.5 yards per carry.
Offensively, the Colonels totaled 308 total yards and the Wildcats totaled 393. Sophomore quarterback
Chase Fourcade contributed 153 yards passing on 12 out of 30 attempts.
On the defensive side, the Colonels again showed their grit and determination. The Wildcat’s
quarterback, junior Dallas Sealey, was sacked five times. Sophomore Sully Laiche led with 2.0 sacks and
senior Marcel Andry had 1.5. Redshirt sophomore linebacker Allen Pittman had a team-high eight
tackles and junior Ahmani Martin had eight stops.
Now that the Colonels have taken care of business at home and on the road over the last three weeks,
they can head into their bye-week feeling confident with a three-game winning streak. Head coach Tim
Rebowe said the break is coming at the perfect time for the team to catch its breath and regroup.
“The way the season is going now, I think it is coming at an opportune time. It will give some guys a
chance to heal up. We’ve got some bumps and bruises,” Rebowe said. “Hopefully we can take care of
business and go into the bye-week with a good feeling and get rested up.”
After their bye-week, the Colonels will face University of the Incarnate Word on October 28 in San
Antonio, TX. With four games left in their season, the Colonels are currently ranked second overall in the
Southland Conference.
