Homecoming week recap

October 10, 2017

Here at Nicholls State University, homecoming is a huge ordeal. Last week gave students and
faculty the opportunity to showcase their spirit; the fun will only continue as it carries over to this week
ending with the delayed, but highly anticipated, football game and court presentation.

The events kicked off on Monday with SPA’s annual Homecoming Breakfast and Dance in the
Galliano Cafeteria. The night began with breakfast in the cafeteria, followed by a silent dance party,
where students were given earphones to individually listen to the music.

“My favorite event as not only a student, but also as a member of SPA, would be the dance and
breakfast,” Amber Burton, a mass communication senior from Mandeville, said. “It’s a really unique
event. It’s tons of fun and the students really seem to enjoy it.”

On Tuesday, a new event was introduced and named “Pie your Players.” This event took place
outside of the student union and gave students the opportunity to shove a pie in a football player’s face.
We finished off Tuesday with the Homecoming Block Party in downtown Thibodaux. The event consisted
of a pep rally, block party and the introduction of the homecoming court.

“Pie Your Players is our newest event,” Burton said. “The football team doesn’t get involved in
many events around campus so we are very pleased that they are involved in this. SPA also sponsored
the band and the free burgers for the block party.”

Wednesday’s activities included “Wear Red, Get Fed” in the quad as well as the homecoming
display competition. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People also hosted their
Homecoming Fashion Show Wednesday night in the Cotillion Ballroom.

On Thursday, SPA hosted Alive at 5, a concert which was open to both students and the public. A
huge crowd gathered for the concert which featured Neutral Snap, a band from New Orleans, and the
famed group, We The Kings.

Finally, on Friday, students were off in pirogues as they raced along the bayou side on campus.
The Pirogue Races are the longest standing homecoming tradition.

Saturday concluded the eventful week with a much deserved win for the Colonels against their
rival, Northwestern State University. Even as Hurricane Nate approached, Nicholls pulled off an
incredible week for anyone with admiration for the Colonels.

Due to Nate’s arrival over the weekend, the homecoming pep rally and tailgate were postponed
to this Saturday, October 14th as the Colonels are matched with Abilene Christian at 3:00. Our long
awaited homecoming king and queen will be announced and the spirited two weeks filled with events
will finally come to a close. Be sure to go out and support your Colonels!
