Nicholls soccer falls in first Southland Conference game of the season

The Colonels wrapped up their six-game road trip with a split in the weekend series of
games. On Friday, the Colonels fell to Southland Conference opponent Lamar University by a
score of 3-1. In Sunday’s matchup versus Southern University, Nicholls emerged victorious,
winning 4-0. With this weekend’s results, Nicholls moves to a 3-5 overall record on the season
and 0-1 in Southland Conference play.
While the Colonels were unable to capture a win in Friday’s match, they held their own
against a tough opponent in Lamar University. The Colonels kept the game tight in the first half
and went into halftime with a score of 0-0. Lamar, the number one team in the Southland
Conference with a record of 6-2- 1, eventually pulled away with three second half goals.
Nicholls’ lone goal was scored by midfielder Francesca Curteis in the 67 th minute on a
strike assisted by fellow midfielder Emily Werenskiold. Freshman goalkeeper Taylor Benoit
recorded 15 saves throughout the game, the most by a Southland Conference player since 2015.
On the game, the Colonels were outshot 29 to 15 on shots and 18 to eight on shots on
goal. Curteis lead the team with four shots. Midfielder Mie Elvestad lead the team with two shots
on goal.
On Sunday, the Colonels snapped their three-game losing streak with a win over
Southern University. In the last non-conference match of the season, the Colonels took control
from the start with a 1 st minute goal by midfielder Hannah Bodron. Nicholls added three more
goals in the second half, with scores coming from Emily Werenskiold, Kristy Helmers and
Jessica Shelby.
Southern outshot Nicholls 18-17 on shots during the game, but Nicholls held a 10-6 shot
on goal advantage. Goalkeeper Taylor Benoit recorded six saves and allowed no goals.
Next weekend, the Colonels will return home to play two games against Southland
Conference opponents. Friday’s match will be against the University of the Incarnate Word at 4
p.m. The Colonels will then play Abilene Christian University on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games
will be at the Nicholls Soccer Complex.
