TKE’s Bras for Breast Cancer raises money for breast cancer research
October 10, 2016
Tau Kappa Epsilon fundraised money for breast cancer research and awareness in their event Bras for Breast Cancer.
Members of TKE walked around Nicholls State University’s campus wearing bras over their clothes in hopes to raise $500 to breast cancer research and awareness. TKE accepted donations during the week of October 3rd to October 7th.
This was the first year that Bras for Breast Cancer took place at Nicholls.
“This is the first year we’re doing it,” Joey Tardo, education sophomore from Mandeville, said. “On Monday, we were all surprised by how much we had raised and it kept getting better throughout the week. It’s definitely something we’re gonna do next year.”
The donated money was stored inside the bras the TKE members wore over their clothes.
“Some of us borrowed [bras] from friends,” Tardo said. “I got mine from Walmart.”
All proceeds from the fundraiser will be given to Dee’s Wings of Hope, a non-profit organization located in Thibodaux.
According to Dee’s Wings of Hope’s website, they promote breast cancer awareness and support organizations that fund breast cancer education, training and screening programs. The organization formed to honor Dolores Daigle Thibodaux.
The American Cancer Society reports that breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, but, due to early screening and increased awareness, death rates from breast cancer have been dropping since 1989.
