Nicholls Soccer among the highest scoring teams in the NCAA
September 28, 2016
Despite a handful of rough games, Nicholls soccer remains one of the highest scoring soccer teams in the NCAA.
Once at the top of the list, the Colonels have fallen a bit and are now tied for sixth place with the University of South Florida. Both teams are averaging 2.88 points per game.
“Those stats were really skewed by a few games where we just had a lot of opportunities to score,” Nicholls soccer Head Coach Michael McBride said.
Nicholls won with a score of 8-0 and 10-0 against Southern and Grambling State, respectively, which no doubt contributed greatly to their ranking.
“It’s really nice to be recognized when compared with over 300 other schools,” McBride said.
Although the Colonels are currently sitting near the top as far as scoring is concerned, they have not won a conference game. Nicholls has either lost or tied every matchup after winning three of their first four games.
“We’re struggling to improve our consistency, but the strength of our opposition has also improved,” McBride said.
The Colonels have entered conference play, which McBride said has always typically been higher stakes than out of conference games.
“Our best game was against Abeline (ACU). They’re the best team I’ve seen in my short tenure here,” McBride said. Nicholls lost the away matchup 1-2 in overtime.
“We still need to improve across the board, we need to do everything better. We’re really trying to find our team identity and what’s important to us,” McBride said on the team’s outlook going forward.
Nicholls soccer plays their next two games against A&M Corpus Christi and Houston Baptist at home. With a current record of 3-4-1, the Colonels are still searching for their first conference victory.
