Majors and Minors Fair recap

September 23, 2016

Nicholls hosted its annual Majors and Minors Fair this Wednesday to highlight the various majors and minors offered on campus.

The fair occurs every fall semester and allows students to walk around campus and explore various booths set up in almost every building on campus that offer information about majors and minors. Students can bounce around between their classes with ease as they explore the major they have declared or look into other majors the university offers.

University College organizes this day and allows students the chance to get information about switching their major, picking up a minor, and to meet other students and professors who are interested in the same subject and career areas as they are.

Professor James Smith of the Languages and Literature department believes the Majors and Minors Fair is a great way for students to get acquainted with both the courses that are offered in each major, and with the professors who teach the courses.

“I think we have courses that students aren’t even aware of, and this is a good way to personally interact with students and tell them what we have and also introduce ourselves,” Smith said.  “A lot of our classes are online and a lot of students may not even be aware of who their teachers are, so this is a way for students to meet their professors. “

Since he began teaching at Nicholls in 2010, Smith has found the Fair a useful service provided to students through University College and he hopes it continues. This semester, Smith has e enjoyed helping students see how many interesting options they have when it comes to picking their classes.

“We have seen students who are very excited in the courses we offer,” Smith said. “The English courses have lots of topics like Harry Potter, Madmen, and Jewish literature. We have a constantly rotating series of courses for students to take.

Freshman dietetics major Katelyn explored the Majors and Minors fair in hopes of getting information about adding a minor in psychology. She made stops to the English, sociology, and psychology booths in Peltier and Polk to get her questions answered.

“It’s very helpful because it gives all students the opportunity to do it all in one day and not have to do it on different days and interfere with schedules. It went really well and I got some good information.”
