Defensive Linemen Kenny Dotson earns Defensive Player of the Week
September 19, 2016
Nicholls football player Kenny Dotson earned Defensive Player of the Week from both the Louisiana Sports Writers Association and the Southland Conference last week after their narrow loss to Georgia.
The sophomore defensive lineman recorded a total of five tackles, one sack, and one forced fumble against Georgia.
“It could’ve been anybody on defense. It [the game] was a team effort,” Dotson said on the awards.
His words echo true as the Colonels held Georgia running back Nick Chubb, considered by analysts to be one of the best in the NCAA, under 100 yards. The Nicholls defense, while they were not able to secure a win, was also able to hold Georgia to only a single touchdown.
“I was so hyped, I knew they were going to score,” Dotson said on the fumble he forced.
He was right about his comment about the offense, for soon after Dotson was able to cause the fumble, Nicholls was able to put points on the board for the first time during the game. His forced turnover was not the only one for the Colonels, as Nicholls defensive back Jeff Hall was able to add an interception of his own.
“Next year we’ll still be looking at this game,” Dotson said.
Nicholls was expected to get blown out by what was then the number nine-ranked team in the country, and thus the Colonels looked to make quite the statement for themselves when they finished within two points of the Bulldogs.
“We still have to come out and execute,” Dotson said on the remainder of the season.
The team did just as he said in their second matchup of the season as Nicholls State University took down the University of the Incarnate Word Saturday with a score of 35-28. The Colonels look to continue their defensive intensity as they look ahead at their next opponent, the 1-2 South Alabama Jaguars.
