Husband-and-wife physics professors to answer questions about science, religion and life as a whole
September 12, 2016
Husband-and-wife physics teachers with an interest in the minds of young scientists will be taking questions of all kinds from students for their second question-and-answer session.
Kaisa Young, assistant professor of physics, and her husband Chad Young, associate professor of physics, will be answering questions students may have about scientific topics, religious topics and questions about life as a whole on Tuesday, September 27 at noon in the Beauregard conference room. Kaisa Young said she and her husband are answering these questions as a way to get to know their students so they can teach them better.
“I know a lot of my students have jobs and they have families,” Kaisa Young said. “If we can talk about some of those different things, I feel like I can respond to that better in the way I teach.”
The Youngs invited the 250 students in their respective physics and astronomy classes but they encourage students outside of their classes to attend as well.
“I would really like to know what students think about things,” KaisaYoung said. “What do they think about scientists who are Christians?”
Kaisa Young said the intent of the session is not to sell a particular belief system, but to find out what other people think so that questions can be discussed.
The session will be the second of its kind following the first session about evolution. Through this series of sessions with students, Kaisa Young said she and her husband want to “lessen the gap” between students and professors.
“We really just want to make some connections, be open to students and no longer be scary professors,” Kaisa Young said.
