Don’t let one American made Apple spoil the bunch

American athletes have been heading back home all week after dominating the sports world in the 2016 Olympics. Held in Rio, this year’s Olympics was one of the most talked about events of the summer, but not necessarily because of great weather and the awesome scenery there. Although America bullied themselves in most of the sports, too much focus was placed on one swimmer who didn’t deserve the attention placed on him.

U.S. swimmer and four-time Olympian Ryan Lochte made the press throughout the Olympics, but not solely because of his athletic ability or his bright blonde hairdo. Instead the swimmer reported to Brazilian police that he and three other swimmers had been robbed at gunpoint at a Rio de Janerio gas station. That story days later turns out to be false, or as Lochte told reporters, “over-exaggerated.” Since then, Lochte has been on an “I’m sorry” spree and has been dropped from major sponsors such as Speedo, Ralph Lauren, Airweave, and Gentle Hair Removal. This incident, unfortunately, overshadowed most of the Olympics news during the second week of the event and is still being talked about today in the media.

Even before the incident, Rio went through a lot just to have the Olympics there and for the years leading up to the event, many countries pointed out why Rio wouldn’t be a great host. Now that the Games are over, a lot of reports and reviews of the Games depict a more negative outlook on the event and also around Rio. According to an article released earlier this week on CNN’s website, recent mishaps included stray bullets, robberies, an attack on a media bus, serious crashes in the cycling road races, Zika virus discussions, empty seats during opening events, and obnoxious booing crowds at some of the events.

Out of the 558 U.S. athletes who attended the event, a whopping total of 121 medals were earned. 46 of them were gold, which outshined China in comparison as they came in second overall in medals with 70 this year. Although America came up a bit shorter than the all-time American 239 medal total from the 1904 Olympic held in St Louis, Missouri, this year’s performance by out athletes was nothing short of great resilience during performances.

Despite all of the opinions about the Rio and this year’s Games, the 17-day event was one to remember for America and of course the American athletes who trained for their moment for four long years. The effort and work that these athletes put in has gotten a backseat to one athlete and his thirst for attention. When thinking of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, think about the GOAT (greatest of all time) Michael Phelps, the domination of Simone Biles in women’s gymnastics, the promising future of swimmer Katie Ledecky, the excellence and grace that Allyson Felix possessed on the track, and the other awesome athletes that put their heart, sweat, blood and tears into being the very best at what they do and representing this country.
