In a game filled with a variety of breath-taking plays, the lacrosse club routed the Roadrunners of Texas-San Antonio with a final score of 13-3 Sunday afternoon at the Nicholls football practice field. Sophomore attacker Dustin Schuetter, who scored four goals and made a variety of other key plays, led the Colonels to victory. Freshman attacker Jacob Dagate also added three goals, as well as Sophomore Josh Sanders who also added a two in the victory. With the win, the Colonels improved their record to 4-0 for the season, their best start of the club’s young history. The Colonels’ key to winning was successful transitions.”We had great transition today. We wore these guys down and did a great job of maintaining the ball on offense,” Billy Tauzin III, lacrosse club head coach said.
A major factor in the Colonels’ success has been their ability to hold onto the ball.
“We’ve done a great job of maintaining the ball, which is helping us win these games,” Tauzin said.
The Colonels were able to overcome numerous penalties and were forced to battle through cold temperatures in their victory.
Tauzin admits the Colonels need to reduce their penalties in the future.
“We’re getting too many penalties right now,” Tauzin said. “We need to calm down a little bit and watch the penalties because that could hurt us in a tight game.”
The Colonels collected a total of 44 groundballs and had a total of eight assists as a team.
Junior goalie Derek Stevens blocked three shots, but Texas-San Antonio was given very little opportunity to score as the Colonels’ defense proved to be too much and would lead to the Roadrunners’ demise.
In addition to the three blocked shots, the Colonels also had nine take-aways en route to their victory.
The Colonels’ offense would shine as they led by as many as seven at one point during the game and would never look back. The Colonels used a team effort, recording seven assists with five different Colonels scoring a goal.
The lacrosse club is back in action on February 20 against the Houston University Cougars in John L. Guidry stadium at 8:00.
In order for the Colonels to remain undefeated, Coach Tauzin III feels his team must stay focused mentally.
“We’ve got Houston next and they’re in the upper division, but we will still try to play them as tough as we can. We still have some things to work on-mostly mental stuff-if we’re going to have a chance to win,” he said.
