TNW asserts First Amendment rights

We as members of the press appreciate our freedoms established within the First Amendment. We have these freedoms, but our duties go above and beyond those that are outlined in that right.
The Nicholls Worth is a student newspaper produced by students for students. Our responsibilities lie in reporting on the events, accomplishments, trials, tribulations, celebrations and students that are Nicholls State University.
We pride ourselves in being an independent publication free from censorship. Our adviser only guides us in the newspaper process. She neither sees nor dictates what can and cannot be put in the paper. Each Thursday, just as each of you pick up the paper, so does she.
We are a real newspaper with real stories. We uphold the values of fairness and accuracy as well as a high amount of journalistic integrity.
We should not be viewed as just an advertising piece or a piece that only reports good news. We are not a public relations tool for the University. We do our best to report on what students want to read. We cover the issues important to students.
Our stories are not dictated by advertising or the administration. If something goes wrong or right within these two areas and the issue directly influences or affects students, we report it.
We have included a picture of our top editors: (from left to right) Chris Singleton, sports editor; Stephanie Detillier, managing editor; Marie Ory, editor; and Kenny Boudreaux, lagniappe editor.
Stop them, tell them your issues, ask about our operation. They will tell you that each minute they work on the paper is for students. Each deadline they meet is for students, and the many late Tuesday nights lasting well into Wednesday mornings are for students.
Understand the issues of freedom and freedom of speech. Use these rights to write letters to the editor. Become involved in your campus news.
