What students should know about Mosaic

October 17, 2016

Nicholls students have the opportunity to get their work published or to work on an editorial board each year if they choose to get involved with Mosaic. With the submission deadline for Mosaic quickly approaching, here are some things students need to know.

What is Mosaic?

Mosaic is the official literary magazine of Nicholls, published annually through the department of Languages and Literature. It features students’ essays, poetry, and short stories.

Who can submit to Mosaic, and how?

Mosaic accepts submissions from any current, fee paying Nicholls student. Students submit their work digitally through email, to [email protected], and can submit as many pieces of literature as they want. Although the submission date for Mosaic was set for October 15th, according to Dr. Katherine Conner, the deadline is being pushed back to November 1st.

Who puts Mosaic together?

Mosaic is funded through a student-assessed fee that was approved by the student body of Nicholls. Along with its student board of editors and graphic designers, Dr. Katherine Conner’s Publishing Practicum students aid in the process of creating Mosaic. In the fall, they review and rank submissions. In the spring, students edit selections for publication. Dr. Conner has been serving as the faculty of advisor of Mosaic since 2012, and this year’s editor is Hannah Kidder.

Why Submit to Mosaic?

Aside from the opportunity of getting their writing exposed through publication, students have the chance to win money. Anyone who submits is automatically considered for the David Middleton Poetry Prize and the Al Davis Fiction Prize. The Editor’s Choice Prize is also awarded.
Actively participating in Mosaic also provides students with the chance to get real-world work experience through paid editing jobs. There are benefits for both the writers and editorial board of Mosaic.

Advice from the advisor:

“I think it’s a really good way to get yourself and your writing heard and seen and read on campus,” Conner said. “It’s a unique opportunity, too, because it’s hard to get published. It’s a student magazine and it’s only for students, so you have a better chance. I think it’s a good time to take that chance while you’re a student.”
