SGA planning events for the spring semester

Nicholls Student Government Association is back for another semester and preparing for upcoming events.

The main objective for SGA during every spring semester is elections. Elections are approximately a two and a half week long process and are for president and vice president, referendums for changes to the constitution and also for Mr. and Mrs. Nicholls.

After elections, the upcoming president works with the present president to start planning activities for students for the end of the semester and for the beginning of the fall semester.

Partnering with the Student Programming Association, this year SGA will help students celebrate during Crawfish Day by donating items of their choice. Crawfish Day will be held on April 25.

SGA will also cosponsor the Swamp Stomp Festival, which will be held on March 22 on Nicholls campus. Students can listen to local musicians and choose from an array of foods, as well as participate in activities. It is open to family and friends.

As a supporter of Nicholls athletics, SGA participates in an event called “Stuff Stopher” for the basketball team. They also help promote big baseball games.

Another event on the agenda for the spring semester is Can Wars. The Art Department hosts a can drive, and there is a competition between students to determine who can build the best project with the cans.

Past presidents have left their mark within the SGA office and President Adam LeFort plans to do the same. He works heavily with University Relations, alumni, and Printing. Through continuous involvement with Printing, LeFprt said the University has gained a better connection with social media.

SGA offers numerous services to students. They offer town hall meetings where students can voice their opinions about problems on campus or about things that need to be changed. Located in the student union is the SGA suggestion box. Officers check it two times a week to see what students have questions and concerns about. Students have the option of being anonymous.

Senators have a “What I’ve Done, What I’ve Heard” forum, where they listen to students voice their opinions about situations around campus. Students can also send concerns via email. SGA additionally offers free legal aid and free scantrons to students.

“Right before midterms and before Mardis Gras break, students normally voice the most opinions. This is where we try to get them all and figure out what’s wrong,” said LeFort.

Every college has its own senator that helps give back to the students. They are responsible for keeping up with the budget and making sure that the students are taken care of. If students don’t know who their senator is, they can easily access the information online or refer to bulletin boards that are located in each hall.

SGA will spend time critiquing their actions and figuring out what worked and what did not work in the previous semester. Allowing this evaluation will help them become better for Nicholls State’s student body.
