Freshman year brings new beginings for sorority member

For her first year of college, freshman Taylor Prince, elementary education major of Morgan City, decided to join Phi Mu for the recent recruitment process in order to gain new experiences.

Prince said she is excited to make new friends and partake in the many functions that sororities are involved in. She said that although every sorority is friendly, she felt drawn to Phi Mu and already feels so close to the girls.

“I was a little nervous starting college, but it is good being in a sorority with older members who are willing to help,” Prince said.

Prince thinks being in Phi Mu will also benefit her academically, especially since the members have to document study time in the library. Certain members have also mentioned to Prince they could work on school assignments together if she has any trouble. She said there are girls in the sorority that have the same major as her and can offer advice on how to succeed in the field as well.

Since Prince’s major is elementary education, she is thrilled to do philanthropy work with children. Every year, Phi Mu serves for Children’s Hospital of New Orleans, and Prince feels this will help her handle children much better.

“I love working with little kids, and I cannot wait to be involved with the hospital,” Prince said.

Another part of Phi Mu Prince is excited about is receiving a big. Phi Mu will soon announce their Big and Little, a system of an older member adopting a new member. Because she sees other Big and Little’s relationships being so strong, she cannot wait to have her own big to get to know. She said it will be nice always having someone there.

Four year member, senior and mass communication major, Emilie Ulicsni said she is so happy for the new girls of Phi Mu. Ulicsni knows it will take a little time in order for them to adjust to the sorority but they will not regret joining.

“Phi Mu taught me not to be afraid to go after my future goals, and it helped me be more involved with other organizations on campus,” Ulicsni said.

Prince said she will gain a lot from the older members, such as leadership skills and how to be a better person. Ulicsni knows the graduating seniors of Phi Mu are leaving the chapter in good hands with the way the new members will lead.

Although Prince said joining a sorority is not for everyone, she thinks every girl should at least give recruitment a try.

“Being in Phi Mu will inspire me to do better and build my character,” Prince said.
