Nicholls officers gain national recognition

Two Nicholls police officers received national awards through the National Police Chief Association for the first time in Nicholls history. The awards are based on the performance of the police officers throughout the country. A committee evaluated the independent performances of the officers that were nominated. There are 27 different categories for the awards. These awards are given on a quarterly basis and are very competitive awards.

Director of University Police, Craig Jaccuzzo, nominated Sergeant Steve Tullis for the Criminal Investigation Award and Sergeant Michelle Harris for the General Commendation Award.

“These awards shows that some of the best and brightest officers that are providing law enforcement are equal to, if not better than, any other law enforcement agency,” Jaccuzzo said.

“I am proud of Tullis and Harris’s performance and responses to criminal matters on our campus,” Jacuzzo said. “They have always acted professional.”

Tullis has been in law enforcement for 14 and a half years. He plans to stay here until he retires. He would like to move up in ranks and bring crime rates down. Tullis believes that this award is an honor for the entire police force.

“I like my job as an officer because I enjoy the contact with the students,” Tullis said. “You gain experiences that you normally would not.”

Harris has been in law enforcement for almost five years at University Police. She is not intending to leave University Police at Nicholls either. Harris plans to graduate and get a master’s degree in counseling and wants to continue doing police work. When Harris found out that she received that award, she said she was shocked.

“I like my job as an officer because I like to help people,” Harris said. “I know at least 80 percent of the students here. It is nice to come to work and know the people there.”

Jaccuzzo said that when he became chief his motto was “Commitment of service and performance in a professional manner.” “This award shows that we have stuck to this motto,” Jaccuzzo said.
